What is sublingual immunotherapy?

Sublingual immunotherapy is an exciting advancement in the field of allergy care. The approach uses a specially-formulated serum to administer carefully controlled doses of allergens into your system, including dust mites, certain types of grasses, and ragweed. 

When drops of your customized serum are placed beneath your tongue, your body quickly absorbs them. Over time, your immune system becomes more tolerant of the substance and is less likely to overreact the next time you encounter a stronger concentration of that specific allergen.

During the first stage, you apply one drop of your customized serum beneath your tongue each morning for one week, waiting for two minutes before swallowing. During the second week, you apply two drops, then move to three drops in the third week and four drops in the fourth week. 

You go through this process for a total of five cycles, which takes around five months. At that point, you transition to five drops beneath your tongue each day for four weeks to reach the desired level of immunity. 

You may notice a gradual reduction in the number and severity of symptoms, but it can take 12-24 months to see the full benefits of sublingual immunotherapy. Many people who complete the full course of treatment are able to live allergy-free.
